For many, the Invisalign is a blessing. Not only does it help straighten teeth just as well as traditional braces, but it does so without being noticeable. It also allows the user to remove it before participating in activities such as sports, social occasions or work meetings However, when it comes to eating, it may not be as simple as most Invisalign users think. Need help figuring out what to do and not to do when it comes to eating with Invisalign?
Here are five tips to keep in mind:
5 Tips On Eating With Invisalign
|
1. Take It OffWhatever you do, do not eat anything with the aligners still inside your mouth. If you're drinking water, that's fine. However, for anything else, take it off. The last thing you want to happen is to pop your favorite crisps into your mouth and chew , only to find out later that it has damaged or cracked your Invisalign. Plus, these aligners are quite an investment, so why take the risk? Always take off your aligners before eating. |
2. Eat QuicklyFor your aligners to give its maximum benefits, you need to wear them for at least 20 hours a day. With that said, if you know you love to eat often and a lot, try and speed things up. Or better yet, try to cut down on unnecessary snacking and the like. In other words, try to make sure that the time it takes for you to eat doesn't cut down the time you've worn your aligners to below 20 hours. Otherwise, your treatment won't be as effective or it may take longer than expected. |
3. Lower Consumption of Food that Can StainSome foods out there are more prone to staining your teeth (and aligners) than others. For example, coffee is a must-have for many as a pick-me-up during the morning. If you have coffee daily, that's alright. However, try not to drink them with your aligners on. Otherwise, they're going to get stained, and even the stains on your teeth can stain the aligners. Also, extreme temperatures can deform the plastic which could not only be painful but expensive if a replacement aligner is needed. We hate to say so, but we wholeheartedly recommend that you try your best to drink only water for the duration of your treatment. |
4. Brush OftenWhenever you eat anything, you have to brush your teeth right after. Whether it is a full-fledge meal or some fruit, you'll have to brush no matter what. Why is this so? Because your aligners and your teeth are always in contact with each other. If one of them isn't clean, you'll end up food and bacterial adherence on the teeth which could lead to tooth decay( cavities). With that in mind, always keep a toothbrush and toothpaste nearby, or pack a travel toothbrush with you wherever you go so that you can get to cleaning after eating. |
5. Reduce Snacking HabitMany people have the habit of snacking in between meals. If you have the same habit, you'll need to make sure that your aligners are off, which sometimes you might forget. In addition to that, you need to brush your teeth every time you eat something to keep your teeth and aligners in top condition. Do you want to deal with brushing your teeth after chewing on a sweet treat every time? If not, then do your best to reduce snacking. |
