As our name suggests, we are a forward thinking and innovative practice. In modern day life, technology is evolving at an almost alarming rate. Most of the changes are an improvement and enhance our quality of life. Dental care should be no different. Modern day dentistry is a world apart from the days of dreaded dental care. For example, laser dentistry. We have invested in the Waterlase i Plus 2.0 which has replaced the scalpel in our practice. Here is what Dr Nissit Patel has to say about the Waterlase i Plus: 'Since we have acquired the Waterlase i Plus, I have not needed to use a scalpel for my surgical work. The laser is far less invasive, there is far less bleeding and the recovery time is much reduced. The feedback from patients is overwhelmingly positive. Dental implants are the very best method to replace missing teeth. Long term studies have shown that properly planned, carefully placed and well maintained dental implants can last decades. This is not true for the old methods of replacing teeth such as bridges and dentures. Here's why:

1. Did you know that a dental bridge often involves cutting down healthy tooth/teeth to replace the missing tooth? 

2. Did you know that when a healthy tooth is cut down, there is a 20% chance that that tooth will die in the longer term and require root canal treatment? 

3. Did you know that that once teeth are removed, there is a constant remodeling of the soft and hard tissues which is the at the greatest level in the first year? 

4. Are you aware that teeth can drift into the space of missing teeth or over erupt- move up or downwards? This can severely impact on biting and function.

We believe strongly in minimally invasive dentistry. Wherever possible we will use techniques that are kind to teeth and gums, involve no drilling of healthy tooth tissue and involve no pain. One of our favourite techniques is the Social 6 lingual brace. This is a great technique for the cosmetic improvement of the front 4 upper or lower teeth. The brace is placed on the inside of the teeth, making this a truly INVISIBLE brace.The treatment times are often very quick, making this a short term treatment. So if you cannot stand the thought of metal train track brackets, using aligners (such as Invisalign) for 20-22 hours of the day, and you simply want to straighten your front 4 teeth, the Social 6 lingual brace could be for you. Our case of the month for July involves the restoration of severe tooth wear using the Dahl technique.

The Dahl technique is a great concept for the treatment of localised tooth wear, especially on the front teeth. The concept involves potentially a number of methods but we prefer direct bonding. For example, if the upper front teeth are worn but there is no space to restore them, we may use the Dahl concept to restore them. Direct composite restorations are placed to restore the teeth to the original anatomy and contours. This is done very carefully in accordance to occlusal planning (bite). This will cause premature contact on the new restorations and create space between the upper and lower back teeth. However, over time, this space closes and the jaw re adjusts to create contact once more. This can take a number of months. Therefore this treatment is often completely non invasive. Whereas in the past, teeth were cut down to pegs for crowns and veneers to restore tooth wear, we can now use adhesive technology to replace the lost tooth tissue.
