Digital Dentistry For Dental Crowns

We are now living in the digital age and dentistry is no exception to moving with the times and adapting to new technology. As our name suggests, we are progressive and implement new technology which has a real benefit for our patients. Recently, we have invested in the Trios intra oral scanner. This is simply a fantastic piece of equipment that has changed the way we work within only a few months of acquiring the unit.

Workflow For A Dental Crown In The Past

1. Preparation of tooth

2. Estimate by eye that enough space has been created and that the angulations are correct. Estimate shade of crown by eye.

3. Silicone impressions of the teeth (the messy ones that stick to your

face, lips and feel like they are taking out the rest of your teeth)

4. Temporary crown

5. Impressions sent by post to the laboratory

6. Laboratory cast the impressions in stone and wait for setting

7. Typically, work on the crown starts the next day

8. 2-3 weeks to arrive back at the practice via post

9. If any errors were caused at the preparation stage, impression stage, casting stage; the crown will not fit. Have you had your dentist grinding down the crown to make it fit? This is why!

10. New preparation, impressions are required for a re make with a resultant loss of time for both parties.

Workflow Using The Trios Intra Oral Scanner

1. Preparation of tooth

2. Scans are taken in HD in 3-D and in colour

3. Analyze preparation on the software to ensure correct space, angulation, margins and digital shade testing of the adjacent teeth at various points.

4. NO impressions are required except for a tiny one to make the temporary crown.

5. The scan is e mailed to the laboratory with full instructions

6. The models are 3-D printed

7. Digital design of the crown which is milled

8. Crown is received back at the practice within 1 week

9. Fitting is then completed.

So far, at Progressive Dentistry, all of the crowns have fitted beautifully with only minimal adjustment required. The shades have been superb.

So if you are in need of a dental crown, think digital, think intra oral scanning, think Progressive Dentistry.

If the teeth are not in the right place or well aligned, any cosmetic treatment will be a big compromise. For instance, in the days gone by, there was a fad for porcelain… CONTINUE READING

Single Crown Replacement For Front Tooth

Our case of the month for February involves the replacement of a single front tooth crown. Although this may seem a simple process, the technical skill involved in achieving a great match to the adjacent teeth is incredibly high. A dental crown is often needed if a tooth is badly broken, decayed or has had root canal treatment. Heavily damaged teeth will not be able to withstand the everyday forces of eating, chewing or grinding and may split or fracture. If the fracture is below the gum level or between t… READ MORE
