Laser Treatment Of Gingival Pigmentation

Our case of the month for October 2022 was the laser treatment of the gum pigmentation due to genetic reasons.

What is gingival pigmentation?

Although not usually a major pathological issue, dark gums or gingival pigmentation can be a hugely aesthetic issue for those who have a high lip line or 'gummy smile'. In most cases, the cause is usually genetic or physiological. The overall colour of the gums can be determined by a number of factors such as the thickness of the biotype, the amount of keratinised tissue present, blood supply and pigments such as melanin and carotene.

Needless to say, it is important to make sure a full medical history is taken to rule out any pathological reason for the gingival pigmentation which could possibly be from systemic illness such as Addison's disease or cancer such as melanoma or Kaposi sarcoma.

Waterlase i Plus laser is a minimally invasive treatment for gingival pigmentation

Our Waterlase i Plus laser is an amazing tool with incredible versatility and applications. The treatment for depigmentation is minimally invasive, requires no post treatment dressing and stitches and the healing process is usually remarkably pain free. In our case, the before and after photographs were taken exactly one week apart.

Before laser depigmentation

classic gingival pigmentation with a high lip line

This is classic gingival pigmentation with a high lip line, a thick biotype and genetic reasons for the colour.

After the Waterlase i Plus treatment

a much improved gingival profile after laser treatment

One week after laser treatment, a much improved gingival profile. Treatment completed by Dr Nissit Patel.

The treatment usually takes about 45 minutes to remove the pigment. There are a few after care instructions such as adopting a soft diet, using a super soft tooth brush such as the ones provided by Curaprox, avoiding acidic foods and drinks and pain relief as required ( usually minimal) The procedure can be repeated if needed especially if the pigment is particularly deep, there is no underlying damage to the tissues at all.
