Our case of the month for January is a dental implant case involving a premolar tooth. The tooth was lost due to infection around a failing root canal treatment. In most cases, the very best replacement for a tooth is a dental implant. After careful planning, a screw retained dental implant was placed. 

What is a screw retained dental implant? Well, here are the advantages: 

1. These types of crowns are screwed directly into the dental implant. 

2. There is NO cement. This is important as excess cement can lead to difficulty in cleaning and cause inflammation around the implant. 

3. The crown is 100% retrievable. This has a great advantages as if the crown needs to be removed for whatever reason, it is simply unscrewed. 

4. They still look natural and life like! Please look at the photos to view how a screw retained implant crown looks and works:
 

Social 6 lingual braces are an excellent technique to correct mild to moderate crowding or spacing on the front teeth. Here are the 8 facts:

1. The brackets ( a number of types can be used including STB, Forestadent 2-D, Innovation L) are placed on the inside of the teeth making the brace 'invisible'.

2. The brackets are only placed on the front 6 teeth. 

3. The system aims to correct the incisor teeth (the front 4 teeth) 

4. The canine teeth act as the anchors to the system and therefore cannot be moved.

5. The treatment time is usually very quick, from 12-24 weeks only.

6. Long term retention is vital. We strongly advise a fixed wire retainer as well as a removable retainer to maintain the results.

7. For more advanced conditions, full arch or full mouth comprehensive orthodontics will be required. Difficult cases will need to be referred to a specialist orthodontist.

8. By correcting the cosmetic appearance, there are potentially other major benefits such as improved oral hygiene, improved anterior guidance (bite) and improved self confidence!

We are delighted to announce that we have a new dentist joining our practice - Dr Jessica Doherty.

Jessica Docherty joins the Progressive Dentistry Team having spent the last 3 and a half years in post graduate training providing dentistry at some on the leading dental institutes in both Scotland and England. Having obtained her BDS from University of Dundee she spent a further two years at the Edinburgh Dental Institute enhancing her training in both restorative dentistry and oral surgery. 

Whilst here, Jessica was responsible for providing a wide range of specialised restorative dentistry, including provision of implant retained dentures, re-root treatments and periodontal surgery. Keen to gain additional training in all aspects of dentistry and having developed a natural skill in oral surgery, Jessica continued her post-graduate training at the UK's largest and busiest Oral & Maxillofacial Unit in University Hospital Aintree, Liverpool. Here she worked alongside leading oral and maxillofacial surgeons specialising in all aspects of oral surgery including wisdom teeth removal, apicetomies, surgical removal of broken down teeth and oral rehabilitation following oral cancer surgery. 

Jessica now joins Progressive Dentistry from Alder Hey Children's hospital where she has spent the last 9 months working as a paediatric dentist. It was here she was responsible for providing tailored oral prevention advice and prescriptive dental treatment for anxious and medically compromised children in the north west of England. Jessica keeps up-to-date on the latest evidence based dentistry through professional development and as a member of the Dental Faculty at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, she attends regular courses to ensure she provides the highest quality dental care to each and every patient. She is also, by invitation-only, a member of the Royal Odonto-chirurigcal Society of Edinburgh, the oldest dental society in the world! 

As a Fulham resident, Jessica unwinds as a regular attendee at the local Birkram Yoga studios and is currently in training for her first ever tri-athalon next year. Jessica will be providing general, cosmetic and children's dentistry on Saturdays. Therefore, if you cannot make an appointment during the week we have the solution.

Our case of the month for December involves the cosmetic and functional correction of very crooked lower teeth. Crooked lower teeth can cause all sorts of problems:

1. Poor oral hygiene 
2. Major build up of plaque and tartar 
3. Gum inflammation

5. Poor aesthetics

The Dentistry awards are the largest dental awards within the dental profession and the ceremony took place on December 6th.
 

There are many ways to reach us, all modes of transport are viable. This is unusual in London! Here are the options:

1. Car- parking is available on Fulham High Street, which intersects Fulham Road and New Kings Road. Parking is ONLY 40p per hour. We do not believe there is parking in London for less.

2. Bus- numerous bus services stop at Fulham High Street. 17,74, 220, 414 and 430 can be used.

3. Underground- Putney Bridge underground station is only 5 minutes walk from the practice. Parsons Green station is only 10-15 minutes away.

4. Train- Putney Train station is a short walk over Putney Bridge, located on Putney High Street.

5. Boris bikes- there have been Boris bike stations recently added in the Fulham area.
