Dental Implants - The Facts

Dental implants are the recognised gold standard to replacing missing teeth. The dental implant actually replaces the lost root of the tooth, or the foundation. This is possible due to phenomenon called 'osseointegration'. This process is where the jaw bone is actually able to grow around and attach to the implant creating an incredibly strong bond. Once this bond has occurred, then a new tooth can be fabricated which will attach into the implant. Sounds simple? Well, in simple cases yes. If there is plenty of good quality jaw bone and the absence of any other dental issues, then having a dental implant can be a stress-free procedure.

Choosing The Best Dentist

However, it is vital to choose a dentist who is experienced and who has spent a great deal of time training in the field of dental implants. Not every dentist will have the proper training to carry out this procedure, so it is important to ask about the qualifications received. Dental implants require a great deal of planning. This will involve analysing models of your teeth, dental x rays and photographs. CT scans can be of massive value especially when vital anatomical structures need to be identified. After careful analysis, a treatment plan can be drawn up and discussed.

The Costs Of Dental Implants

Each dental practice will have their own fee for dental implants. In general, a single dental implant including the crown on top should be in the region of £1800-2500. Any less and the question must be asked about the quality of implant, crown and value of the overall procedure.

Dental Implants And Maintenance

Implants must be looked after just like natural teeth. Hygiene is crucial. Although dental implants cannot decay, they can develop gum disease. This is called peri-implantitis. Special techniques and cleaning procedures are required to stabilise this disease. If left untreated, this can lead to the loss of the implant.
