One of the most common questions we are asked is whether gaps between the teeth can be closed and how to keep them closed. For many, spaces between the front teeth are unsightly and a cause of constant frustration This is usually because the space has opened up after past braces and despite using retainers every night. The key to keeping the spaces closed is all in the planning. The roots of the teeth must be as parallel as possible and then a fixed retainer AND night time retention is essential.
Please take a look at our case of the month for October 2026 to see how Dr Nissit Patel managed a classic spacing case and kept the gaps closed for many years.
Our lovely patient hated the spaces between her front teeth. Past treatments did not work and the gaps re appeared.
Spaces closed and have remained closed for many years
How did we manage this?
The treatment was completed with a lingual brace which sits on the inside of the teeth. The planning was the key as we wanted to make sure the root positions , called root torque, was optimal. The teeth were held using a fixed stainless steel wire retainer and night time retainers for the first six months and then every other night. The teeth have remained exactly the same for over 9 years now and it is always great to review cases after such a long time with no changes. A happy patient!
