The Future Of Cosmetic Dentistry

We strongly believe in non invasive techniques to enhance smiles. Long gone are the days when teeth needed to hacked away with destructive techniques to provide a new smile. Modern day dentistry encompasses minimally invasive techniques which require no needles, no drilling and no pain! For example, our case study below wanted to close the gaps between the teeth. They were told that porcelain veneers would be required, which involved removing all the tooth enamel and many thousands of pounds.

However, our Principal Dentist Dr Nissit Patel advised another solution; composite bonding. This involved no drilling, no needles and was far more affordable. In addition, the maintenance is simple and cost effective. There really are no downsides.

Lingual Braces- The Truly Invisible Brace 2011

The only truly invisible dental brace is one which sits on the inside of your teeth. Lingual is Latin for 'towards the tongue' hence the name lingual brace.

This is one of the most popular forms of cosmetic brace. Kate Middleton even had her teeth straightened with lingual braces before the big day and Cheryl Cole wore lingual braces whilst judging on the X factor. However, lingual braces are not just for celebrities and A list stars, the treatment is available for all who wish to improve their smile discreetly. The brace can be attached to 6 or more of teeth. It depends on the amount of straightening required which is determined largely by an innovative analysis which can show us a predicted end result. A very popular technique for mild to moderate crowding cases is called 'Social 6'. This is because the brace is only applied to the front 6 teeth. This technique can be excellent for relapse after previous orthodontic treatment, where the teeth have started to drift out of position. Our case study below highlights such a case.

Porcelain Veneers On Front Teeth

Porcelain veneers are an excellent way of correcting the cosmetic appearance of the front teeth. This may be due to chips, cracks, discolouration, failing fillings and correcting previous veneers which have failed. Porcelain veneers require an in depth knowledge of cosmetic dentistry and the mechanics of the teeth meet and function during everyday activities. This is called occlusion in the dental field. Porcelain veneers which are not executed to exceptionally high standards will fail for a number of reasons. Our case study highlights such a problem and how our Principle dentist, Dr Nissit Patel, corrected the situation:

Straighten Teeth With Discreet Braces

In the past orthodontic treatment involved metal braces which were worn for typically 1-2 years. With the advances of modern techniques and technology, cosmetic re-alignment of teeth can be achieved quickly and discreetly. There are many methods available which range from removable to fixed solutions.

Inman Aligners

The removable options include the Inman aligner and Invisalign. Inman aligner can correct the front 4 teeth for mild to moderate crowding. The mode of action involves a continual force using nickel titanium springs which guide the teeth into position. Re-alignemnt can be rapid, typically in less than 4 months.

Invisalign Clear Aligners

Invisalign is a highly sophisticated technique which involves clear aligners to straighten the teeth. Initially your records are sent to the USA. After laser scanning and analysis on their advanced software, a 'Clincheck' is created. This is a video of your current teeth position to an anticipated final result. At this stage, any changes can be made. Once you have agreed the 'Clincheck', the Invisalign aligners are made and ready for fitting. These are changed every 2 weeks until your teeth are straight. As simple as that!

For minor movement or finishing after orthodontic treatment, clear aligners are ideal. These are similar to Invisalign aligners. Due to the minor amount of movement, correction can be achieved in a few weeks. One such technique is called Simpli5 and we also have our own WOM clear aligners.

Teeth Retainers

Once teeth are straight, then they need to be retained. This is done by using a retainer at night or by bonding a wire on the back of the teeth. If major correction has been achieved, then a combination of both is often required. Retention is for life and this should be checked by your own dentist at your regular examination appointments.

Our next blog will discuss fixed orthodontic options for cosmetic re-alignment.

Minimally Invasive Dentistry 2011

One of our key principles at Progressive Dentistry is to adopt minimally invasive procedures with all aspects of our treatment.

Recently, Martin Kelleher Consultant dentist at King's College London made the news by pointing out that some 'cosmetic dentists' were identifying diseases such as 'porcelain deficiency' and excess of tooth enamel. Of course, these are fabricated conditions but he was making a serious point. Removing tooth enamel removes the protective layer of the tooth which is the strongest tissue in the human body. This is turn can lead to future problems such as tooth fracture, root canal treatment and even tooth removal. This is why we promote minimally invasive technique to create beautiful smiles.

A smile transformation can be done without any enamel removal. How?

Firstly aligning teeth to achieve the best position using our rapid orthodontic techniques, then bleaching to whiten and brighten and finally composite bonding to repair those imperfections and achieve symmetry.

Dental Hygiene And Overall Health

Dental hygiene is crucial for not only oral health but also overall health. Many studies are now finding a link between poor oral hygiene and systemic disease such as heart disease, stroke and cardiovascular disease. A study last year by the University of California showed that women who regularly visited their dentist and hygienist could reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease by up to one third. See leading author Timothy Brown comments of the report here.

The British Dental Health Foundation warned that gum disease could be a much bigger problem than previously thought and stressed that people need to be made more aware of the condition. The good news is that gum disease is on the whole, a treatable and manageable condition. Our dental Hygienist and Therapist is an expert in managing simple and complex gum problems. She will show you the best way to manage your dental hygiene at home, which is the key to success.

So why wait for symptoms, call us today and book your dental and hygiene appointment today.

Dental Tips 2011

Our dental tip of the month is to ensure that your oral hygiene is as good as possible. This is the best way to prevent dental disease in the future. Here is a simple oral care regime:

1. Brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste for 2 minutes.

2. Always floss or use in between cleaning aids.

3. Keep sugary foods and drinks to a minimum in between meals.

4. Visit the hygienist on a regular basis. If you have gum disease or have suffered from gum disease in the past, this should be every 3-6 months.

5. Use plaque disclosing tablets occasionally to see where you are missing plaque from the teeth and gums. These can be bought from all good chemists.

Did you know that we routinely check your gums during our dental examinations and provide percentage scores on dental plaque and bleeding levels? This is a great way to monitor your oral health in the long term. Our sophisticated software automatically calculates these scores for us on every check up. Please remember, prevention is better than cure. To book your oral health assessment please call us on 020 7731 1162 for a comprehensive analysis.
