Smiling, The Way Forward?

Smiling has been regarded as one of our most important social assets and research has shown that smiling brings about a host of benefits. This can vary from enhancing your mood to becoming more socially appealing. A telephone survey by Harris Interactive found that 89% of adults agreed that to make a good impression you need a bright, white smile. 55% believed that a person's smile is the best physical indicator of someone's friendliness. To achieve a bright, white smile may not be as complicated as you may think. Tooth whitening is the most common form of cosmetic dentistry and can enhance a smile no end.

Our technique achieves great results, simply, quickly and cost effectively. The best results are always achieved by seeing an experienced dentist and some one you trust. Ask to see case studies and before/after photographs to see the results that have been achieved. We have hundreds of photos on all aspects of dentistry from simple tooth whitening to complex full mouth reconstructions. Please ask us and we will be happy to show you our case studies. Seeing is believing!

Enhance your smile today and call us on 0207 7311162 or e mail us on info@progressivedentistry.co.uk for your initial consultation.

Bridging The Gap

Missing teeth can be an embarrassing and unsightly issue, especially at the front of the mouth. There are a number of options to replacing the space including a dental bridge.

A bridge is where the adajcent teeth are used to anchor the missing tooth. This may be an excellent option if the adjacent teeth require treatment with dental crowns to protect them or already have successful crowns which could be converted to a bridge.

The following case study demonstrates this exact scenario. A front tooth was lost due to gum disease which left a major cosmetic issue. After careful planning, a dental bridge was provided as an ideal solution to a tricky problem. Below are the before and after photographs.

Tooth Decay On The Rise In Fulham

A report has revealed that nearly half of five year olds in Fulham and Hammersmith have tooth decay. The report, which was released by the Children's Oral Health Task Group, showed that 45 percent of five year olds in the borough have decay, a figure which is significantly higher than the London average, which currently stands at 33 percent. Nadeev Pooni, from the Central London NHS Trust, said that it is very important that parents take responsibility for their children's oral health and encourage them to adopt good habits from a very early age.

The Children's Oral Health Taskforce is a new group, which was formed with the aim of identifying and addressing causes of poor oral health. The report made a number of recommendations to try and improve standards of oral health among children, which included campaigning for a consultation on adding fluoride to the water supplies in the area. The most important method of prevention is to ensure regular dental examinations and hygiene treatment. Diet is also crucial and try to avoid sugary snacks and drinks during the day. It is best to keep these treats at mealtimes only. Children of registered parents are seen for an initial consultation free of charge.

We provide only the best treatment and materials for children. We do not use amalgam metal fillings and have a very strong emphasis on prevention of disease.

The Future Of Cosmetic Dentistry

We strongly believe in non invasive techniques to enhance smiles. Long gone are the days when teeth needed to hacked away with destructive techniques to provide a new smile. Modern day dentistry encompasses minimally invasive techniques which require no needles, no drilling and no pain! For example, our case study below wanted to close the gaps between the teeth. They were told that porcelain veneers would be required, which involved removing all the tooth enamel and many thousands of pounds.

However, our Principal Dentist Dr Nissit Patel advised another solution; composite bonding. This involved no drilling, no needles and was far more affordable. In addition, the maintenance is simple and cost effective. There really are no downsides.

Minimally Invasive Dentistry 2011

One of our key principles at Progressive Dentistry is to adopt minimally invasive procedures with all aspects of our treatment.

Recently, Martin Kelleher Consultant dentist at King's College London made the news by pointing out that some 'cosmetic dentists' were identifying diseases such as 'porcelain deficiency' and excess of tooth enamel. Of course, these are fabricated conditions but he was making a serious point. Removing tooth enamel removes the protective layer of the tooth which is the strongest tissue in the human body. This is turn can lead to future problems such as tooth fracture, root canal treatment and even tooth removal. This is why we promote minimally invasive technique to create beautiful smiles.

A smile transformation can be done without any enamel removal. How?

Firstly aligning teeth to achieve the best position using our rapid orthodontic techniques, then bleaching to whiten and brighten and finally composite bonding to repair those imperfections and achieve symmetry.

Dental Hygiene And Overall Health

Dental hygiene is crucial for not only oral health but also overall health. Many studies are now finding a link between poor oral hygiene and systemic disease such as heart disease, stroke and cardiovascular disease. A study last year by the University of California showed that women who regularly visited their dentist and hygienist could reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease by up to one third. See leading author Timothy Brown comments of the report here.

The British Dental Health Foundation warned that gum disease could be a much bigger problem than previously thought and stressed that people need to be made more aware of the condition. The good news is that gum disease is on the whole, a treatable and manageable condition. Our dental Hygienist and Therapist is an expert in managing simple and complex gum problems. She will show you the best way to manage your dental hygiene at home, which is the key to success.

So why wait for symptoms, call us today and book your dental and hygiene appointment today.
