1. Brush your teeth twice a day using an electric tooth brush with a 2 minute timer
2. Floss or use inter dental brushes in between your teeth- this is vital
3. Use a flouride mouthwash afterwards-do not rinse with water
4. Limit sugary foods and drinks (sorry!) to mealtimes and reduce the frequency of acid attack on your teeth
5. Limit acidic foods and drinks as much as possible; did you know that hot lemon water has the same acidity as battery acid!
6. Drink alcohol in moderation (sorry again!)
7. For sensitivity, rub some sensitive toothpaste directly on to the tooth and leave overnight. Repeat for at least 7 days.
8. Visit your dentist and hygienist when due- early intervention means less extensive treatment in the long term

Our case of the month for November involves the replacement of a single missing tooth using a dental implant. Our case of the month for October is one involving dental implants. Dental implants are the best way to replace missing teeth whether this involves one missing tooth, several teeth or all teeth. After all, what you rather have- a removable plastic plate or a fixed tooth which is almost identical to your own tooth?

Our case is one that spans more than five years and just goes to show how dental implants can look just like natural teeth and how the gum line responds to well planned treatment. Dr Patel replaced a missing canine tooth using an Astra TX implant and over the years the site has improved and actually looks healthier now, over five years on.

The case highlights the importance of proper planning, training, attention to detail and skill when involved with implant dentistry. This is not an easy part of dentistry and takes many years to reach a certain level.

Halloween is just around the corner with trick or treating now a favourite for the all young ones. This means one thing- sugar!!!! Now we hate to be spoil sports but copious amounts of sugar is not a good thing. Not only will this create hyper children (all parents will know the after effects of a sugar rush) but is also a recipe for tooth decay. Here are our tips for preventing tooth decay on Halloween:
 

1. Eat the ghoulish treats in one go rather than spread out over a few hours. This will limit the pending acid attack to one session and allows the natural buffering effect of saliva to be more effective.
2. After the monster feast, use some child mouthwash to start the fight back with fluoride
3. Do not brush their teeth straight away, allow natural buffering and then brush last thing at night as usual
4. Never rinse after brushing- this will remove the effectiveness of fluoride
5. Try to limit the scare raising sugary delights until after a main mean- we know this could be a thankless task but try!

Halloween is fun and excess every now and then is OK. Obviously, we do not advocate this on a regular basis! This will lead to sure fire dental treatment in the future which could be hellish for some- you have been warned!!!
